Skirt Dog
I have a 6 month old dog that is chewing my house to bits. He has been castrated and it hasn't made any?
difference to his behaviour. He has chewed the skirting, door frame and two doors in the kitchen and every morning I am finding another patch where he's chewed it during the night or during the day whilst I'm at work.(He's only alone for approx 4 hrs max) . He has stacks of chewy toys and hide bones but he prefers wood obviously. He is very close to looking for a new home if I can't cure this problem.
Oh man I had this same problem with my puppy. I promise almost all dogs do this, and there are good ways to help.
(1) DEFINITELY crate train him. This is kind of tough but so worth it. You may have to go through a week of him barking and whining for a few hours at night, but get a crate and have him make that his sanctuary at night (whenever you've gone to bed) and whenever he's home alone. NEVER put him in the crate when you're angry and yelling at him, though. Always make it a happy, peaceful place, and he'll be crate trained a lot faster. I found it works to toss in a few treats into the crate throughout the day, and when the puppy discovers them, he'll start realizing that the crate is an exciting place full of treasures! I am gone at work for 8+ hours during the day, and we sleep about 9 hours at night, and my dog now goes in his crate voluntarily at night whenever he gets tired. He also goes in there during the day if my husband and I are fighting or if he's overwhelmed by lots of people or the vacuum or something. It totally calms him down, and we don't even have to lock him in most of the time.
(2) Really use the chew toys. My dog is a lab/australian shepherd mix and really loves the rope toys. We also got him a REALLY hard beef bone (not the rawhide ones that crumple and disappear in a few hours) that has lasted a year and he's barely made a dent in it. Whenever your puppy starts to chew on you or anything in the house, say "UH-UH" really loud and then grab a toy and make him chew on it. Get him interested in the toys by teasing him a little with it or throwing it in the air.
(3) Keep him occupied. Spend a little more time with your puppy while he's going through this stage. When you're home, play with him, take him to the park and run him like crazy so he zonks out when you leave. Mainly he's just bored when you're gone (the crate helps a lot with that, cause he'll just sleep), so help him realize there are other fun activities to do in the meantime.
(4) Read the book Katz on Dogs by Jon Katz. This is a great, practical book, and I know it has a great section on crate training. It should have good advice on specifically chewing, too.
(5) Don't give up! Your puppy will absolutely get better--even if it takes a little bit of time.
