Does AKC mean I will get a healthy dog without defects?

Are aKC dogs healthy and more disease free and long lived than a backyard breeder mutt type dog?  Doesn't all that inbreeding with only a few regiseterd dogs mess up the genes the same way inbreeding with people does?
